Around 16 people were killed and over 20 wounded when two Delhi-bound passenger trains collided near Mathura in wee hours on Wednesday. Hours after Goa Express rammed into stationary Mewar Express, people continued to be trapped in the jumbled carriages.

Rajesh Vajpayee, CPRO North-Central Railway, was quoted as saying by PTI that the Goa Express collide with the Mewar Express from behind at 4:50 am.

Update

The state's Agriculture Minister Laxminarain Choudhry has said that the Uttar Pradesh government will give compensation of Rs.10 lakh and a job to the families of those killed in the train accident in Mathura early Wednesday.

In the collision that took place between Mathura and Vrindavan, an unbooked compartment of the Mewar Express was ruined.

R D Tripathi, Divisional Railway Manager, Agra, who was present at the spot said that prima facie the train driver of the Goa Express was at fault.

Soon after the accident, Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered a probe into the mishap.

Since many passengers are still trapped in the damaged bogey, the toll may soar up. Among the trapped are children.

“Some passengers are trapped and are being rescued,” Sri Prakash, member, traffic, Railway Board said.

Asked how many people were trapped inside, he said, “We really don’t know.”
