North Korean Cargo Vessel Detained, Freed
For suspected coastal zone violation, a North Korean cargo vessel MV Hyang Ro, sailing from Colombo to a Pakistani port, was detained by the Coast Guard and the Navy after it was found anchored in Indian territorial waters off Vatakara coast without mandatory permission.
A Coastguard Commandant at Beypore said that the ship was detained on Friday after it was found anchored in suspicious circumstances about 35 kms off Vatakara coast.
However, on inspection it was found that there was nothing incriminating on board and the procedures to release the vessel have begun. All its 44 crew, everybody of them North Korean, was questioned.
Navy PRO in Kochi, Commander Roy Francis, said, “The vessel had entered Indian waters without mandatory clearances from the authorities. They (crew members) stated that they had anchored there because of an internal leak in a tank. We are investigating.”
Inspection by a joint team comprising the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Police, Intelligence Bureau and port officials found that the vessel had an internal leak in its fuel tank, as claimed by the crew. The vessel was anchored 7-8 nautical miles from Kuriyar beach in Vadakara.
