Nehru-Edwina Relationship Was One of ‘Love and Friendship’: Kin

Eminent author and late PM Jawaharlal Nehru’s niece Nayantara Sehgal has said that the relationship between Nehru and Lady Edwina Mountbatten was one of ‘love an friendship’ and anybody claiming it to be sexual was ‘conjecturing’.

The remarks came in reaction to reports that script of ‘Indian Summer’ – a film based on Alex vom Tuzelmann’s book – had been cleared by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Giving permission for shooting the film in India, the government has, though, asked for removal of intimate scenes between the two.

In response to a query if Nehru and Edwina, wife of India’s last Viceroy Lord Mountbatten, were in love, Sehgal told a news channel, “Anybody who claims that they had a sexual relationship would be conjecturing. What they had was a long and lasting relationship of love and friendship. It was a rare relationship based on meeting of minds. They had respect and admiration for each other.”

She said that they both “shared a huge slice of Indian history. They had a relationship of love”.

Responding to another question whether relationship was sexual, she said, “I won’t know for sure. It was between two people in private, how can one know… I don’t think it matters (relationship). It was of a rare quality. Much more than a relation, it was a bond between two families. My mother and uncle were friends (of the Mountbattens). I am a friend of Pamela (daughter of Mountbattens) and recently we discussed this film which is being made.”
