BJP flays C’garh govt over paddy procurement

The BJP on Monday criticized the decision of the Chhattisgarh Cabinet Sub-committee for Agriculture to start procurement of paddy from December 1, with former Agriculture Minister Brijmohan Agrawal saying farmers will face storage problems and losses.

Interacting with the media, Agrawal said ideally procurement should have commenced from November 1. He said the government is adopting a dilly-dally attitude so that it does not have to procure more paddy.

The BJP has been raising the demand of procurement from November 1 and 20 quintal per acre. The government is unable to take a fixed decision on paddy procurement, he said.

Countering Agrawal, the Congress termed it frustration of the opposition leaders that the government of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel is procuring the paddy at Rs 2,500 per quintal from farmers.

In a statement, Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Dhananjay Singh said during its tenure, the BJP never fulfilled the promises it made to farmers and now it was doing politics on the issue.

He said this year, from more than 19 lakh farmers 15 quintal of paddy per acre at a rate of Rs 2,500 per quintal will be procured. The total target for the current kharif season is 85 lakh tonnes.
