Stapled Chinese Visas are Invalid for Travel: India

Clamping down on China’s practice of issuing visas on separate papers sheets to Kashmiris, the government has issued a travel advisory warning Indians that such visas will be recognised as a valid travel document.

Following Beijing’s denial to stop the practice, government is left with no option but to deal the issue home by warning Indians that such visas will not be recognised by the Indian authorities.

“Such paper visas stapled to the passport are not considered valid for travel out of the country,” said the ministry of external affairs in a travel advisory on Chinese visas.

The travel advisory noted that it had come to the attention of the Indian government that the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi and the Chinese consulates in Mumbai and Kolkata were issuing visas “on separate pieces of paper stapled to the passport to certain categories of Indian nationals on the basis of their domicile, ethnicity and/or place of issue of the passport”.

The advisory pointed out that usual practice is pasting the visas on the pages of the passport.

“All Indian citizens intending to travel to the People’s Republic of China are advised that before making any travel arrangements they should first ascertain from the Chinese Embassy or Consulate, as the case may be, whether the visa being issued to them will be affixed to the passport or will be in the nature of a stapled paper visa, so that they are not inconvenienced or put to any financial loss later on this count,” said the travel advisory.
