Editorial: Questions about Karkare’s Death Need Immediate Answers

Kavita Karkare, wife of ATS chief Hemant Karkare who died fighting terrorists during 26/11 terror attacks, took us aback when she decided not to pursue the case of her husband’s death, putting the onus of getting answers of her unanswered questions on media and society. It’s shameful for a country that claims to be a victim of terror if widow of its anti-terror squad chief fails even to learn in year’s time as to how exactly her husband died. Ms Karkare’s running out of mental and physical strength to follow up the case is understandable and her questions are well taken. As Ms Karkare says, the only seeming cause behind her husband’s death was not only a defective bullet proof jacket that he was wearing while fighting, but also that he and his other companions didn’t get reinforcement till forty minutes, a good enough time to let them become sitting ducks for terrorists. Policemen reportedly maintained that Karkare went into operation blindly, but his bullet proof jacket is missing, and also the file. What a coincidence! How ironical for a system that spent Rs 22 crores for preserving dead bodies of nine terrorists but couldn’t preserve a jacket, a file! Though chief minister Ashok Chavan and Former deputy commissioner of police YP Singh has pledged to inquire into the matter to bring it to its logical conclusion, they don’t seem to treat it differently. They should urgently keep the matter on their top priority keeping in mind its importance. The purchase of defective jackets, Karkare’s killing and missing of his jacket in a way suggests that we may easily let our cops become victims of militants’ bullets. It’s a wrong message for those already in job. If those responsible for purchase scam and mislaying of the jacket and the file are not identified and chastised in time, it will be difficult for us to expect from our security officers to be as active, enthusiastic as Karkare if, God forbids, country faces any more such strikes.

The matter has other implications, too. If we cannot treat corruption in our anti-terror operations, the gravity of our charge that Pakistan is not acting on 26/11 culprits is lessened. Transparency International has recently released its fresh list of corrupt nations in which India stands at poorly 85th; with this, country’s commitment towards war on terror comes further under scanner, for a country really devoted to fight terrorism has to make it sure that its security officials get good quality weapons, ammunitions, safety items and any corruption case therein is strictly dealt with. So Ms Karkare’s fight for justice is, in fact, a fight for justice of all those who became or are becoming victims of terror; it’s, in a sense, a step to assure the world that India, the second biggest victim of terrorism in 2008 according to the US report, is sensitive about its preparation to take on terrorists. Hope, Bombay High Court, hearing a PIL, would soon instruct a probe on missing jacket and the file.
