IIT Bombay imposes Rs 10,000 fine on student protesting against ‘veg-only’ tables

Days after a few students protested against the designated “veg-only” tables at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, the institute has slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on of the students and has launched an inquiry to identify two others who are suspected to have taken part in the protests.

“This act was a premeditated attempt to disrupt the peace and harmony within the mess, in defiance of the advice provided by the Associate Dean SA (Students’ Affairs)…” the mess council of Hostel 12, 13 and 14 said in a meeting held online on October 1, at which the decision of the penalty was also taken. The controversy erupted after one of the mess councils reserved some tables for vegetarians.

The mess council of these three hostels held a meeting with wardens and associate wardens of the respective hostels to discuss the complaints of unruly behaviour and flouting of rules by a few students during dinner on September 28, a day after the “vegetarian only” tables were reserved. The three hostels share a combined mess.

The mess council had earlier sent an email to all its residents informing about the designated space for vegetarians in the combined mess. Six tables were reserved where only vegetarian food will be taken. The rule sparked unrest among students at the campus as according to them this official segregation was unnecessary and not at all inclusive. The rule was imposed to create “a more inclusive and peaceful dining experience for all,” the mess council stated in the email.

On Thursday, a few students protested during dinner by eating non-vegetarian food on the of the designated tables, calling it a way of civil disobedience.

A fine has been imposed on of the protesting students for now, as mentioned in the minutes of the meeting shared by the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC), an informal students’ collective on campus.

The fine amount will be deducted from the student’s Semester Mess Advance, that is paid at the beginning of the semester as it was unanimously agreed that the behaviour of the student was “contrary to the inclusive and peaceful atmosphere at Hostel 12, 13 and 14 mess.”

“The mess council resolved to enlist the support of student representatives from the Hostel 12, 13 and 14 councils to assist in identifying the other two individuals involved in the incident. Once their identities are established, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against them as well,” the minutes of the meeting further added.

“We condemn the tyrannical decision of the admin and urge to reverse the regressive policy immediately,” the APPSC tweeted supporting the protesting students.

Meanwhile, the institute didn’t respond to any queries.
