51 patients died in Nanded in 4 days: Bombay High Court asked- Why 97 posts of professor in medical college, recruitment of only 49

The series of deaths continues in Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Medical College and Government Hospital in Nanded, Maharashtra. 51 people have lost their lives in the last 4 days. Taking action on this, Bombay High Court had issued a notice to the state government.

While hearing the same matter for the second consecutive day, the High Court asked the government – 97 posts of professors are sanctioned in the medical college, but only 49 professors are posted there. What would you say about this?

The next hearing on this issue will be on October 30. A day earlier, the High Court had rejected the reason of shortage of medicines in hospitals and had sought details of the health budget from the state government.

High Court said on medicine purchase – no CEO, recruit this one

The court had appointed advocate Mohit Khanna to investigate this case. He told that medicines are procured by Hafkin, a government unit of the state. Tender takes a lot of time. It doesn’t even have a CEO. There has been a decrease in medicine purchases. Since 2017, Hafkin has not been able to meet the state’s needs. A fund of Rs 700 crore is lying there for the purchase of medicines, but it is not being spent.

On this, the bench of Justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Arif Doctor said that the tribunal was formed in May, October is going on. It still has no CEO. this is the problem. You come up with good policies, but when it comes to implementation nothing is done. The government is instructed to recruit a CEO within two weeks.

Government’s answer- Posts will be filled by November

Advocate General Birendra Saraf, appearing for the Maharashtra government, said that most of the patients were brought in the last stage. There is a lot of pressure on government hospitals. Also there is shortage of staff. Therefore no one can be held responsible for these deaths. CM himself is keeping an eye on the situation. Officers have been given powers at the district level to make necessary arrangements.

Saraf also said that the Health Department of Maharashtra Government is working on the vacancies. These will be filled by November.

Earlier, on the evening of October 3, Shiv Sena MP Hemant Patil reached Nanded hospital and expressed displeasure over the death case and got the toilet cleaned by Dean SR Wakode. After the photo and video of the incident went viral, the police registered an FIR against Hemant Patil. Dean alleged that the MP stopped him from performing his duty and insulted him.

Disagreements emerged within the government regarding the poor condition of the hospital. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde claimed everything was fine. Meanwhile, Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif admitted the shortage of staff. The opposition also alleged shortage of medicines and staff and equipment being shut down in the hospital. The Maharashtra government has constituted a three-member committee to investigate. The committee has started work from Tuesday, October 3.
