1500 farmers sought permission for mass self-immolation: letter written to the President; Demand for fair compensation in irrigation project

In Burhanpur, about one and a half thousand farmers have sought permission from the President for mass self-immolation. Farmers from three villages Pangri, Basali and Nagjhiri of Khaknar tehsil of the district gathered on Thursday and wrote a letter to the President. In which they have said that if the work of Pangri Irrigation Project starts without fixing the compensation, they will commit mass suicide.

Irrigation project is proposed under medium irrigation project in village Pangri of Khaknar area. On Thursday, Indrajit, sub-engineer of the water resources department in Pangri, had gone to hoist the flag at the site of construction of Urmaliya dam, when the farmers stopped him from hoisting the flag. Farmers say that the compensation price has not been determined. A farmers’ meeting was also held regarding this, in which officials of the Water Resources Department also attended.

Farmers wrote this in the letter sent to the President

The farmers said in the letter that thousands of farmers will be affected by the proposed irrigation project in village Pangri. The land of many farmers is coming under water. The affected farmers have been demanding justice and fair compensation for the last 11 months. Farmers say that until the compensation is decided, no work related to any kind of dam should be started. If this happens then we will commit mass suicide. Whose permission is granted.

Sub engineer said- sent a proposal of Rs 17.71 lakh per hectare

Sub Engineer of Water Resources Department, Indrajit Urmaliya said that the farmers are against the government’s guidelines. A proposal has been made and sent to the government for rate approval in a special package. Compensation will be received only if the proposal is accepted by the department. A proposal has been sent to fix the rate of Rs 17.71 lakh per hectare under a special package.

He said that compensation distribution is not in our hands. The money reaches the department collector and is distributed through SDM. We or senior officials cannot give any kind of assurance on our behalf

Nepanagar SDM Ajmer Singh Gaur said that he did not get any information in this regard. The farmers did not give any information about where they were gathering. No land is acquired without the permission of the farmers. The process happens as per the guidelines of the government.
