Parliament, Mumbaikars Pay Homage to 26/11 Martyrs

With Lok Sabha resolving to unitedly fight and defeat the forces of terrorism which pose the ‘gravest threat to humanity’, Parliament today remembered those who were killed in the terror attacks in Mumbai on this day last year.

On the first anniversary of 26/11, Chairman Hamid Ansari made a reference in the Rajya Sabha saying that the “indomitable spirit of humankind cannot be subdued by such senseless acts of violence”.

In memories of martyrs, parliamentarians in both houses stood in silence for a minute.

“The House salutes the indomitable courage of the security forces who gave a crushing blow to the terrorists on November 26, 2008 and the fortitude of the people of Mumbai,” the Speaker said.

Besides, Lok Sabha asked the government to take all necessary steps to “wipe out the scourge of terrorism from our country”.

In Mumbai, at the Chhattrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) Station, with the Railway Police standing by, people can come and pay their respects to the martyrs through the day.

A blood donation camp is also being held at the CST.  Prayers have begun at the station – porters, Railwaymen and others connected with the station have been visiting to lay wreaths, some in tears, all saying they shall never forget. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan was an early visitor.

People are also gathering at Nariman House, where six people including a Rabbi and his wife were held hostage in a 45-hour siege and then killed by terrorists. Nariman House will be thrown open to the public soon today and people will even be given guided tours.
