Comments of senior lady IAS officer Shailbala Martin on social media over the use of loudspeakers at temples have sparked a controversy in Madhya Pradesh, where activists of Hindu groups are up in arms against her.
Martin had responded to a post by a journalist in an ongoing debate over the ear-splitting decibels following the death of a 13-year-old, ostensibly due to loud music played over DJ systems in an immersion procession at the end of Durga Puja festivities.
She had raised questions over the public address systems installed at temples. Her comments, however, have not gone down well with activists who are agitating to seek action against her.
With Martin’s innocuous comment acquiring political contours, the Madhya Pradesh police are investigating the matter amid attempts to pacify the agitated activists.
