Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) hosted a five-day course on Urbanisation and Climate Change under the Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) scheme of the Ministry of Education.

The course, held from December 9–13, was conducted by Prof. Rafiq Hamdi from the Royal Meteorological Institute, Belgium, and hosted by faculty members Dr. Surabhi Mehrotra and Dr. Jyoti Sarup.

“The event focused on the critical intersection of climate change and urbanisation, both pressing issues of our time,” said MANIT in a media brief.

The lectures provided a holistic understanding of urban processes and climate change, global climate change modelling, insights from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, and current policy initiatives for integrating climate resilience into urban planning.

Participants engaged in hands-on tutorials on climate data analysis for urban and rural areas and conducted field observations at various locations in both urban and rural settings, gaining practical experience in collecting observational data.

Indian experts in the climate change domain, Prof. Subimal Ghosh from IIT Bombay, Dr. Divya Sharma from Climate Group India, and Saransh Bajpai from WRI India, gave insightful lectures. The Director of MANIT Bhopal spoke on indigenous knowledge of climate change.

The GIAN initiative of the Government of India aims to strengthen academic and industrial collaboration to facilitate advanced international learning experiences for students and professionals through lectures
