Australian Minister: No Evidence of Racial Motivation in Nitin Garg Killing

With repeated attacks on its shores upping worry indices in India, Australia has said that there is no evidence yet to prove that the fatal stabbing of an Indian student in a Melbourne park three days ago was racially motivated and added that such incidents take place all over the world, including Delhi and Mumbai.

Urging Indian leaders to refrain from stoking hysteria over the killing, acting Australian Foreign Minister Simon Crean has said that the incident was one in a spate of stabbings in Melbourne over the Christmas period.

”It so happens that one of the victims is Indian … Melbourne is not the only city in the world where this happens. It also happens in Delhi and in Mumbai,” Crean was quoted as saying by ‘The Age’ newspaper on its website.

”It’s an unfortunate fact of life, but so far as the victim is concerned and his parents, our deepest sympathy for them and we’re doing everything we can to track down the perpetrators.” he added.

Nitin Garg, 21, was stabbed in a Melbourne park while he was on his way to work at a fast food joint in the West Footscray area on Saturday night.

The killing has rekindled a debate over the safety of Indian students in Australia and Crean admitted there could be economic repercussions from the publicity the recent attacks have elicited in India.
