Two Australian Taken into Custody for Attacking Indian Cabbie
Two Australian have been arrested in connection with attack on an Indian cabby and will be produced in court on Monday, said media reports.
Four incidents of attack on Indian taxi drivers have occurred in last three days. The latest incident took place on Friday night when a 23-year-old Indian cabbie picked up two men in Geelong city.
According to reports, Robert Harvey, 25 and Andrew Madden, 24, both of Norlane, allegedly set up the driver shortly afterwards at the intersection of Sparks Road and the Prince Highway where he suffered bruising and swelling to the face and head.
Ben Melis, a police official, said that cabbie was treated at the scene by Paramedics was not hospitalized, said reports.
Both the Australians arrested after the incident were remanded in custody yesterday and charged with robbery and assault-related crimes, reports said.
‘Herald Sun’ reported quoting police that it was a premeditated attack. Though, police has not confirmed whether the attack was racially motivated.
Before this incident, which is the fourth attack on Indian cabbies in three days, two such incidents occurred in the Victoria city of Ballart and another such case in which a quick sentence of three months was administered to a man for abusing and assaulting an Indian taxi driver.
Melia said that an undisclosed amount of cash was also allegedly taken away from the driver. “The evidence tends to point towards a premeditated attack.” he said.
“A number of passersby came to the aid of the taxi driver after he pleaded for assistance from passing cars. One of the accused was held until police arrived.
“The other… was later arrested by police.”
Both men will face Geelong Magistrates’ Court today, said reports.
Melis said it was pleasing to see so many people come to the victim’s aid.
Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner Sujatha Singh specially flew to visit the recently attacked Gurdawara in Cranbourne and also visited Blackburn Gurdawara.
She met Gurdawara members and also community members during her visit.
