Modi Presides Functions at Cost, Collections Go to Welfare Causes

Cashing in on his crowd-puller status, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s office has collected a sum of Rs 23 crore in past five years from public functions, which Modi attended at a cost, reported Times of India.

However, Modi used money for a cause, with large chunk of it being diverted to Kanya Kelavani Nidhi, created for educating the girl child in Gujarat, said report.

Report said that a big part of the sum comes from donations; a good amount is also raised by auctioning gift articles which Modi has received.

A part of the collections also goes to the CM’s Relief Fund, which saw inflow to the tune of Rs 104 crore ever since Modi took over the reins, report said.

Recently, a Gujarat-based corporate house, which invited Modi for inauguration of its facility donated Rs 11 lakh to CM’s fund, said report, adding the amount depends on the paying capacity of the organizers.

In January 2010 alone, Modi has inaugurated nearly 20 such events and presided over hundreds of such events in the past five years, said report.

“He started the practice in 2006. The donation is voluntary,” a CM aide was quoted as saying.
