Two Indians Assaulted in Brisbane
A day after Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd described attacks on Indians as ‘regrettable’, two Indians were attacked in separate incidents in Brisbane, one of them a cabbie, reported PTI.
Police officials were quoted as saying by AAP that a 25-year-old Indian youth was attacked and robbed while using a phone box near his home in Macgregor in Brisbane’s south at about last night.
Report said that the youth, whose identity was yet to be revealed, was hit in the head twice and his wallet stolen.
The attacker was described as tall, of Pacific Islander appearance, with black curly hair and police is on lookout for him, report said.
In another incident, a cabbie was assaulted at about early this morning after an argument broke out with two men in Carindale, in Brisbane’s southeast.
Report said that the attacker punched the driver in the face many times and vandalized the car’s windscreen.
The driver was soon rushed to the Princess Alexandra hospital for cuts to his face and swelling to his right eye, said report.
Report said that two men, aged 28 and 25, are helping police with their enquiries.
Meanwhile, the government again stressed that there was no indication that the attacks were racially motivated. Acting Premier Andrew Fraser said that he wants to assure Indian nationals that Australia is a safe place.
