IT Dept to Look into Source of Maya’s Multi-crore Garland
After BSP chief Mayawati was gifted a huge garland made up Rs 1000 banknote in her party’s rally in Lucknow, the Income Tax department has said that it will investigate ‘source of money’ of huge currency-note garland, said media reports.
Reports said citing sources that IT-department would look into the ownership of the Rs 1,000 notes used in the garland, the bank from which the money was sourced and whether the money used was from disclosed income sources, said reports.
Once the preliminary probe comes to a close, the IT department will make a case for tax evasion accordingly, said reports.
Under the Income Tax Act, 1967, the department has power to suo motu initiate inquiries into suspicious transactions, can issue summons under Section 131 and impound and retain in its custody any books of account or other documents for the purpose. Besides, it can call for any information needed for the case under Section 133(6).
Reports, quoting unnamed sources, further said that the intelligence department would also be instructed to investigate the whole funding of the rally organized by Mayawati for the silver jubilee function of the BSP, reports said.
In the meanwhile, the Congress blamed Mayawati for being unable to control communal violence in Bareilly and compared her with Roman emperor Nero, said reports.
“What kind of a government is this? Bareilly is burning and there is celebration in Lucknow,” Congress spokesman Manish Tewari was quoted as saying, demanding a judicial inquiry into the riots.
“The Nero sitting in UP has a big role. Without administrative support, no riot can continue for two weeks,” he was quoted as saying.
Tewari said that there was an attempt to ‘polarise’ the people in UP and it was the BJP that had taught the BSP the ‘politics of riots’, said reports.
