Plea against Conferring Padma Bhushan to Chatwal Rejected
The Delhi High Court has rejected a petition which challenges central government’s decision to bestow Padma Bhushan on NRI hotelier Sant Singh Chatwal, reported PTI.
After scrutinizing the original documents place by the Additional Solicitor General PP Malhotra, a bench led by acting Chief Justice Madan B Lokur found no substance in the charge that the government didn’t pursue proper procedure in conferring the prestigious title to Chatwal, report said.
On March 25, the court had asked petitioner SK Shah to produce documents to show where the selection committee failed to fulfill the guidelines while considering Chatwal’s name for the award.
On behalf of the government, Malhotra said that a high-level committee was formed after a Supreme Court ruling to consider every aspect of all applicants before finalising their names, said report.
“You cannot level wild allegations. There is a report of the committee which has already considered all the aspects…,” the bench was quoted as saying.
Appearing in person, Shah had charged that Chatwal was involved in several economic offences, report said.
The petitioner had earlier sought a direction to the Centre to rescind the decision to confer the award on Chatwal on various grounds, including his alleged involvement in several cases.
Besides Chatwal, the Centre and CBI were also respondents in the Public Interest Litigation.
