Under Pressure, Nepalese Govt Jettisons Passport Deal with India

Amid mounting pressure from all quarters and opposition Maoist party which also called a general strike today, Nepalese government has said that it is scrapping a contentious deal with India to print ‘smart’ Nepali’ passport, reported IANS.

Premier Madhav Kumar Nepal, snubbed by the Public Accounts Committee of parliament thrice and even criticized by his own party, convened on Sunday night an emergency meeting of the cabinet which decided to throw away the deal, said report.

Talking to the media persons after the meeting, Information and Communications Minister and government spokesman Shankar Pokhrel said that government was revoking the contract given to Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India to print nearly three million machine-readable Nepali passports for the next five years, report said.

Now, the government will invite fresh tender, complying with the instructions of the parliamentary committee.

Government’s decision is expected to have a bearing on the strike called by Maoists to protest the deal with India.

The former rebels are also calling for the resignation of the prime minister over the imbroglio.
