Iran Can Build Missile Capable of Striking US by 2015: Report
An unclassified Defence Department report on Iran’s military has said that the Persian country could build a missile capable of striking the US by 2015, reported Reuters.
“With sufficient foreign assistance, Iran could probably develop and test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the United States by 2015,” the April report was quoted as saying.
Reuters claimed to have a copy of the report, a classified version of which was submitted Congress and which was released on Monday.
Washington, which accused Tehran of pursuing nuclear weapons and is pushing for new round of sanctions, is closely watching the timing of advances in Iran’’ long-range missile technology.
“Iran’s nuclear program and its willingness to keep open the possibility of developing nuclear weapons is a central part of its deterrent strategy,” the report was quoted as saying.
However, it was still not known if the latest estimate on Iran’s missile technology was a departure from a May 2009 National Intelligence Estimate, according to which Iran was unlikely to have a long-range missile until between 2015 and 2020, said report.
The 2009 estimate was revised from an earlier range of between 2012 to 2015.
Representative Ike Skelton, chairman of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, called the report a ‘comprehensive view of the military situation in Iran’, report said.
In addition, the report also had an assessment of military capabilities of Iran and its support to terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as outfits such as Hamas in the Palestinian territories and Hezbollah in Lebanon, said report.
Without offering particulars, the report said that Hezbollah replenished with Iranian support its arsenal beyond levels it had in he 2006 war with Israel, report said.
“Iran, through its long-standing relationship with Lebanese (Hezbollah), maintains a capability to strike Israel directly and threatens Israeli and US interests worldwide,” it was quoted as saying.
It also cited recently uncovered caches of weapons that Iran’s Qods Force gave to Afghan militants, which contained ‘large amounts of Iranian-manufactured weapons’, including 107 mm rockets, said report.
