Thai Security Forces to Blockade Protesters Encampment
Thai security forces are going to form a blockade around the anti-government protesters encampment in main commercial district of Bangkok, reported Voice of America citing military spokesman.
The blockage will start today evening and stop people from getting into the barricaded outpost, report said.
The step follows cancellation by the Thai government of plans to close vital supplies, including food, water and electricity, to the encampment. The government cancelled it as residents complained that they would be affected the most.
In the meanwhile, Red-shirt protesters rejected the government’s threat saying that they had their own power generators and food sources and pledged to carry on demonstrations, said report.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva withdrew his reconciliation plan as protesters declined to end their protest.
Abhisit offered last week to dissolve parliament and hold new elections on November 14, more than a year ahead of schedule, in hopes of ending a crisis that has claimed the lives of 29 people. The death toll includes 25 people killed during an April 10 clash between the protesters and Thai security forces.
The Red Shirts accepted the proposal in principle earlier this month. But they later made a new demand for Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban to face criminal charges for his role in the April 10 crackdown.
The protesters also want Abhisit to appear at the Justice Ministry to answer questions about his role in the crackdown, which he says he will do once he receives authorization from Thailand’s parliament.
