Four Persons Killed, 50 Wounded in Thai Army Crackdown
Four persons have been killed and over 50 wounded in Thai military operations to clear red-shirt protesters, said media reports quoting the Thai News Agency.
In the crackdown, two journalists were injured while one Western scribe identified as an Italian was believed to be dead, reports said.
The government said that as security forces commenced operations to clear demonstration sites, some of the red-shirt leaders ran way from the site they had been occupying in central Bangkok, said reports.
Government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said that security forces took control of the Lumpini Park area south of the protest site, reports said.
All branches of Thailand’s four top banks would be closed in the capital as political violence escalates after troops moved into an anti-government protest camp in central Bangkok, said reports.
In a statement, the Thai Bankers’ Association said that the four banks to be closed include lender Bangkok Bank, second-ranked Krung Thai Bank, Kasikornbank and Siam Commercial Bank, reports said.
The statement said that all branches would be closed at 1300 local time (0600 GMT) on Wednesday.
However, the statement did not mention when the banks would re-open.
The army action came after weeks of defiance by the protesters who are seeking to oust the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.
