GoM on Gas Tragedy to Meet, Submit Report in 10 Days

Bhopal  —  With criticism and accusations flying thick over handling of the Gas Tragedy case leading up to a soft verdict, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has asked the nine-member Group of Ministers (GoM) on Bhopal to convene immediately and submit its report to the Union Cabinet within 10 days, say reports citing sources.

According to NDTV, the GoM, headed by Home Minister P Chidambaram, is expected to assess the impact of the court verdict, and to examine “options and remedies.”

On the night of December 2-3 1984, a leak at the Union Carbide Bhopal plant spewed methyl isocyanate, a highly toxic organic compound, into the environment, killing some 15000 people and effecting lakhs of others.

Last Monday, a local court in Bhopal handed two year sentences to eight accused under provisions of the section 304A of the IPC holding them responsible for causing death by negligence. Incidentally, the court verdict did not mention Warren Anderson, former Chairman of the Union Carbide Corporation, one of the accused absconding in the case.

Stung by outrage caused by the verdict and the following criticism from political opponents, the GoM is now likely to announce methods to improve health facilities for surviving victims and even disbursement of compensation for them.
