Short of Two Votes, BJP Worried of RS Elections in Rajasthan
After naming Ram Jethmalani as its candidate, the BJP is worried over the Rajya Sabha elections in Rajasthan, said media reports.
As many as 78 BJP legislatures have to vote in the elections and BJP has named two candidates, needing 82 votes to make both of them win. Besides Jethmalani, the BJP has also fielded VP Singh for the Rajya Sabha elections.
So Jethmalani, party’s second preference candidate, appears to be two votes short of victory, reports said.
With the elections scheduled on June 17, a worried BJP leadership has herded its MLAs into a Jaipur resort to prevent horse trading, said reports.
Reports further said that some legislatures were vehemently opposed to the party’s order to virtually lock them up.
Sixteen MLAS have, however, stayed away from the resort, the prominent of whom are Ashok Parnami, Devi Singh Bhati, Ghanshyam Tiwari, Gulab Chand Kataria and Rajpal Singh, reports said.
Some of the MLAs are reported to be against Jethmalani as they wanted a local candidate, said reports.
The Rajasthan Assembly has 200 MLAs. The ruling Congress has 102 members, BJP 79 and Communist Party of India-Marxist has three MLAs. The Janata Dal (United), Loktantrik Samajwadi Party and Samajwadi Party has one MLA each.
