Six-year-old Child Killed, 13 Others Injured as Militants Blast Railway Track

A six-year-old child was killed and as many as 13 persons, of them two security personnel, were injured as NDFB militants blasted rail tracks in Kokrajhar district of Assam, derailing five bogies and engine of the Kolkata-bound Garibrath Express in the wee hours today, said media reports.

The incident occurred hours after the suspected NDFB militants blasted railway tracks at two places in Sonipur district last night, reports said.

Rail traffic has been affected in the state due to the explosions.

Police said that a red alert has been issued in Assam in view of the serial blasts, said reports.

They said that the IED blast took place nearly at 2.25 am at Babuli between Gosaigaon and Chowtara in lower Assam, reports said.

Railway officials said that the explosion badly damaged the engine and the first coach of the train, said reports.

They said that a child, identified as Durlav Chetia of Guwahati, was killed in the mishap, reports said.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital in Alipurduar in West Bengal, said reports.

Police also suspect the hand of Maoists in the attack.

A railway spokesman said that the General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railways (Guwahati), along with senior officials, are at the spot and Divisional General Manager (Alipurduar) had reached there with a medical team, said reports.

He said that passengers have been sent by an another train, while recovery vans from New Bongaigaon (Assam) and Alipurduar have been sent to the spot, reports said.

The banned group had threatened to target railway tracks and roads in Tezpur and Udalgiri districts.
