Government trying to evacuate Indians from Libya

NEW DELHI: On Thursday India and maximum governments around the world scrambled to evacuate their citizens.

Situation in Libya is worsening day by day. Around 18,0000 Indians are trapped in Libya and their families at home requesting to government to evacuate their relatives from the troubled country.

External Affairs Minister SM Krishna has said that two warships of the Indian Navy have been dispatched to Libya to evacuate the Indians and one ship has already reached there.

It will take six days for a ship to sail from Libya to India. Out of the 18,000 Indians in Libya, around 12,000 live in the capital Tripoli, and around. It takes four hours from Tripoli to Valletta, from where they can be flown out. Benghazi, which is reported to be in the hands of the protesters, has an Indian population of 3,000.

Krishna spoke to Rajya Sabha that there was need for a “much larger scale operation” as each ship could accommodate only 800-1,000 people. The minister also announced that an inter-ministerial committee headed by foreign secretary Nirupama Rao had been formed to coordinate efforts to ensure safety of people evacuated from Libya.
