Before Polling, Kashmir Valley Bears Curfew Like Look
Deserted roads with mainly security personnel in sight, the Kashmir Valley reflects curfew like situation after security forces were deployed there to maintain law and order in the wake of a 50-hour strike called by separatists to protest against holding of polls in Jammu and Kashmir
Security forces were deployed in Srinagar and other key towns of the valley to prevent any repetition of any untoward incidence reported last evening.
The strike called by Chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani had commenced on a violent note with group of youth shouting anti-election slogans and clashing with police force. In these clashed occurred at many places, at 12 persons were reportedly injured.
To foil any attempt of creating obstruction in polling, several top separatist leaders including Geelani and moderate Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq have been placed under house arrest.
Geelani is under house arrest since April 12, while Mirwaiz and other leaders of moderate faction were put under house arrest last evening. Besides, nearly two dozen prominent separatist leaders have been put behind bars.
According to reports, Police and paramilitary personnel are driving back people to their homes and patrolling the deserted streets to thwart any attempt by separatists to take out processions.
Almost all shops and business establishments, government offices, educational institutions, banks, courts and semi-government establishments are closed and public transport off the roads in the valley due to the strict restrictions imposed by the security forces in view of the general strike.
