93,300 tonnes wheat would be lifted from Madhya Pradesh to Afghanistan
BHOPAL (PTI): India decided to gift 2.5 lakh tonnes of wheat to the war-torn Afghanistan.Food Corporation of India (FCI) has been entrusted with the responsibility to supply the wheat to Afghanistan.
FCI has decided to source bulk share of the consignment from the central state where huge stock of the crop procured by the agency is facing storage problem.
Out of a total of One lakh tonnes of wheat that would be shipped to Afghanistan soon in the first phase, 93,300 tonnes would be lifted from Madhya Pradesh, FCI sources said.
FCI had earlier thought of sourcing major share of wheat for the purpose from Gujarat for administrative convenience.
Kandla port from where wheat would be routed to Afghanistan is in Gujarat.
Now out of the one lakh tonnes of wheat in the first phase, only about 7000 tonnes would be from Gujarat, the sources said.
FCI’s AGM (Commercial) D K Shukla told PTI from Bhopal that the MP government had approached the agency in connection with the excess wheat procured by the foodgrain body.
Reports said that majority of the wheat procured from the state was lying in open due to storage crunch.
“The decision (to send wheat to Afghanistan) helped us resolve this problem,” Shukla added.
Wheat procured from Madhya Pradesh as well Gujarat is of good quality. But, Madhya Pradesh has been preferred for lifting of wheat for Afghanistan primarily to clear the surplus stock from getting damaged, the FCI sources said.
Though the government since 2008 has imposed a ban on wheat export from India to check inflation, the decision to gift 2.5 lakh a tonne of the foodgrain to Afghanistan was taken recently as a goodwill gesture and to further strengthen the bilateral ties.
