Rebels of Libya fighting against Gaddafi force in southwest of Tripoli
BEIJING (Xinhuanet): Libyan rebels are battling Muammar Gaddafi’s forces in a strategic town southwest of Tripoli. Despite the advances made in recent weeks, the government insists it remains in day-to-day control of the country.
Rebels claim they advanced into the outskirts of the town of Bair al-Ghanam, just 80 kilometers from Tripoli.
Bair al-Ghanam is a strategically important location, being a key western gateway to the capital and home to a crucial oil refinery.
This follows weeks of intense fighting in the Nafusa Mountains in which opposition forces have slowly pushed Gaddafi’s troops back toward Tripoli.
The bulk of fighting in recent months has been focused on front lines to the east of Tripoli. But a push by rebels from the Nafusa mountains could force Gaddafi to commit more troops to the southern and western approaches to the capital.
Meanwhile, Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said Gaddafi is in “high spirits” and remains in control of the country.
He insisted Gaddafi will remain in Libya, but wouldn’t confirm that the leader is still in the capital.
As he spoke, bursts of automatic rifle fire shot into the air by soldiers and fresh civilian trainees at a pro-government event in central Tripoli.
The spokesman added that the government so far has distributed 1.2 million weapons to supporters in the west of the country to defend themselves.
