CM to include twenty more wards in gas affected areas list

BHOPAL: After marking the 27th anniversary of the gas disaster on Saturday, on Sunday Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, these wards should be declared as gas affected. His announcement comes a day after of great protests and ‘rail roko’ agitation in Bhopal by the gas victims.

Twenty wards on the city’s outskirts will now be considered for inclusion in the list of gas tragedy affected areas.

Chouhan said he had already written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the matter. Bhopal gas tragedy victims of these areas have welcomed the decision.

He said, “Areas could not be confined to geographical limits and under these circumstances, it is necessary to extend reasonable benefit to rest of the wards of city.”

The CM said even earlier he had written to the PM urging him to compensate those victims in the death category who were being compensated in the serious injury segment.

The CM appealed the PM to sanction Rs 500 crore corpus fund from the Central government adding the Union Planning Commission had given its consent to this proposal. This amount was vital for the state to take care of gas-affected people, he added.

He has highlighted those 5,21, 332 gas-affected people, who were in the category of partially-affected as the GoM did not recommend additional compensation for them.
