CM’s Mission successful, cold wave include in natural calmities
Bhopal. Madhya Pradesh’s initiative met with success on Friday when a Union Cabinet meeting decided to include crops loss due to cold wave and frost in the list of natural calamities. As per the decision, relief amounts can be given under the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) on account of losses to crops due to cold wave and frost. Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan has expressed gratitude towards the Prime Minister for this farmer-friendly and much-awaited decision. He said that its benefit will not only percolate to Madhya Pradesh, but also farmers of other states.
It may be mentioned that cold wave/frost had caused widespread losses to crops in the beginning of the year 2011. After this, Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan had raised the issue forcefully. Shri Chouhan had not only expressed surprise over the fact that no relief can be given to farmers against crop losses due to cold wave, but had also registered strong objection to failure to recognise this as a natural disaster. Chief Minister Shri Chouhan had not only made continuous correspondence with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Union Agriculture Minister Shri Sharad Pawar, but had also decided to go on fast on the issue.
Following forceful democratic efforts of Chief Minister Shri Chouhan, the Prime Minister had telephoned him and assured to take necessary steps in this connection after due consideration. Later, the Union Government had constituted a Group of Ministers on February 21, 2011 with the objective of including cold wave/frost in the list of natural disasters for providing relief under NRDF/SDRF. Chief Minister Shri Chouhan was made a special invited member of this Group of Ministers. Its other members include the then Finance Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Agriculture and Food Processing Minister Shri Sharad Pawar, Home Minister Shri P. Chidambaram and Vice-Chairman of Planning Commission of India Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
