Madhya Pradesh to get Krishi Karman Award for outstanding performance in food grain production

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh, which is on course to constant progress, is set to receive yet another major award from the Union Government. The Krishi Karman Award for the year 2011-12 under “Total Food grains Production Category First” will be given away by President Shri Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi on January 15, 2013. Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Agriculture Development and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Dr. Ramkrishna Kusmaria and Agricultural Production Commissioner, Principal Secretary Agriculture and Director Agriculture have been invited to the function.

Objective of Krishi Karman Award instituted by the Union Agriculture and Cooperative Ministry to encourage outstanding efforts being made by states for increase agricultural production. The awards have been divided into two major categories including Total Food grains Production in which Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Haryana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Bihar are eligible to participate. This award carries Rs. 2 crore with trophy and certificate. On the basis of screening of entries for Krishi Karman Award 2011-12, states with outstanding performances were invited to make presentation to New Delhi on October 30, 2012. Madhya Pradesh’s presentation: Representing Madhya Pradesh, Director Farmers Welfare & Agriculture Dr. D.N. Sharma made the presentation of Madhya Pradesh before a 5-member committee headed by the Union Secretary Agriculture and Cooperatives. The presentation informed that Madhya Pradesh achieved total 216.08 lakh metric tonnes of food grains production during the year 2011-12, which is unprecedented. Earlier, maximum 166.41 lakh metric tonnes of food grains were produced during the year 2010-11. It informed that wheat production was 90.46 lakh metric tonnes in the year 2010-11. But taking long strides the state achieved record of 127.53 lakh metric tonnes wheat production. Per hectare wheat productivity was 2065 kg, which rose to 2609 kg in the year 2011-12. Paddy production was 17 lakh 72 thousand metric tonnes in the year 2010-11, which increased to 22 lakh 27 thousand metric tonnes in the year 2011-12. Similarly, state’s condition is also strong in the sector of procurement of wheat and paddy on support price.

Policy-related decisions in farmers’ interests: During the period under review, the State Government took a number of major decisions including constitution of Agriculture Cabinet covering Agriculture and associated departments, depositing Rs. 100 and Rs. 50 per quintal bonus on wheat and paddy, respectively directly in farmers’ bank accounts, making available hybrid maize seeds available at 90 percent subsidy to SC, ST farmers, introduction of Organic Farming Policy, deposing subsidy amount under agriculture implements and other schemes directly in farmers’ accounts, Advance Fertiliser Storage Scheme, Balram Taal Yojna for augmenting water capacity, 25 percent top-up for agricultural implements and 30 percent top-up subsidy on irrigation through sprinkles etc. by the State Government and introduction of 850 custom hiring centres for increased use of machines in agriculture.

Special initiative for increasing agricultural production: State Government’s other initiatives, which have resulted into higher production of agricultural crops include encouragement to high-yield crops and weekly reviews of input supply, increasing seed production by constituting 1217 seed producer societies, sowing after treating 83 percent seeds, high increase in seed transplantation rate of wheat and paddy, promoting use of micro nutrients, specially zinc phosphate, encouragement to IPM and INM techniques, demonstrations of production and productivity techniques through Farm Field Schools, effective implementation of Kisan Didi/Kisan Mitra schemes, ensuring increase of 16 lakh 35 hectares in irrigation capacity by increasing irrigation from major projects and distribution of loans worth Rs. 7629.27 through agriculture cooperative banks by increasing agricultural credit limit by 30.5 percent during the year 2011-12.

It is noteworthy that the State has already been conferred Agriculture Leadership Award-2012 on September 19, 2012 on the recommendation of a 15-member committee headed by world-famous scientist Dr. M.S. Swaminathan. In the same series, President Shri Pranab Mukherjee conferred an award to Madhya Pradesh for achieving highest agricultural growth rate during the year 2011-12 on December 15.
