United Nations: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that United Nations was not the appropriate forum to raise the Kashmir issue and said that he was prepared to engage in a serious bilateral dialogue with Pakistan.
In his maiden address to the 193-member UN General Assembly, the Indian leader underlined that his government placed the highest priority on advancing friendship and cooperation with its neighbours, including Pakistan.
Speaking in Hindi, Modi said, “I am prepared to engage in a serious bilateral dialogue with Pakistan in a peaceful atmosphere, without the shadow of terrorism, to promote our friendship and cooperation.
“However, Pakistan must also take its responsibility seriously to create an appropriate environment,” he told the Assembly.
Modi also said that this is the time to provide succour to people of flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir, and India had offered help with flood relief to Pakistani Kashmir.
A day after Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that Kashmir is the “core” issue and pushed for plebiscite for the state, Modi, in his address to the UN General Assembly, said that his government has always given importance to good relations with neighbours and to peace and stability in the neighbourhood, including with Pakistan.
