Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the Valley on Diwali to spend the day with those who suffered due to last month’s deluge. Security has been beefed up across the Valley as separatists called for a general strike on Thursday against the visit of the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister on Tuesday said that he would spend Diwali, the festival of lights, in flood-hit Srinagar. “Will be in Srinagar on Diwali, 23d October & will spend the day with our sisters & brothers affected by the unfortunate floods,” Modi tweeted.
This will be his fourth visit to Jammu and Kashmir since taking charge as Prime Minister in May. Ahead of his visit, an inter-ministerial team, comprising representatives from various ministries, are in the state to assess the damage caused by the recent floods in the state.
The delegation includes officials from the ministries of Home, Finance, Agriculture and Rural Development. They met the state government officials and affected people to collate information about the damage caused to dwellings, crops, livestock, roads, bridges, embankments and other government properties.
While the announcement of the Prime Minister generated hope among the flood survivors of a comprehensive package from the Centre to rebuild their lives, two factions of Hurriyat Conference have called for a general strike and peaceful protests against the visit of the Prime Minister.
“Government of India acted as the mute spectator amid worst ever floods in Kashmir and did nothing to mitigate the sufferings of the affected on ground…we will not allow anyone to rub salt into our wounds,” hardline faction of Hurriyat led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani said in a statement.
It said when Modi had not even felicitated Muslims on Eid, his celebrating Diwali in the Muslim-majority state is “unacceptable”.
Shabir Ahmad Shah led faction of Hurriyat Conference also called for a general strike on Thursday and asked people to hold peaceful demonstrations against Modi’s visit.
Modi’s decision to travel to Srinagar on Diwali evoked mixed response from political parties. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed it while opposition PDP gave a lukewarm response by saying that it was a good gesture but could have been done during the Eid festival celebrated immediately after the floods.
Congress leader and Parliament Member Shashi Tharoor said in his tweet that “Diwali in Srinagar is a great idea but it would have been better if there wasn’t an election looming in the state.”
