CPI(M) Raps Kerala CM
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday removed Kerala chief minister VS Achuthanandan from the party’s politburo and the central committee. The leader, however, will continue as chief minister.
Media reports suggest that the decision was taken after Achuthanandan was accused of leaking information to a section of the press.
The decision to exclude Achuthanandan was taken at the ongoing two day meeting of the CPI(M) central committee in New Delhi on Sunday.
Though, the Kerala chief minister, as a member of the committee, attended the meeting on Saturday, he was not present when the decision was taken on Sunday.
Achuthanandan and CPI(M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan are in the midst of a bitter turf war in Kerala.
Achuthanadan has aggressively sought Vijayan’s removal, since the latter was named an accused in the Rs.374 crore SNC Lavalin corruption case, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) a few months ago.
Vijayan’s supporters, a relatively calmer lot, have been calling for disciplinary action against Achuthanandan and blamed him for “violating party discipline”.
Media reports on Sunday were rife with speculations of a split in the CPI(M) Kerala unit, as action against Achuthanandan alone, is sure to trigger the chief minister’s supporters into action.
