Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh files nomination in Yogi Adityanath’s presence
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh on Tuesday filed his nomination as the candidate for the Rajnandgaon assembly seat in the presence of his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath.
This is the third time that Raman Singh is contesting from Rajnandgaon. Earlier, Raman Singh had contested from this seat in 2008 and 2013.
The Congress has fielded former BJP MP Karuna Shukla, who is a sworn critic of Raman Singh, from the seat. Karuna Shukla is the niece of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Rajnandgaon is among the 18 Left-wing extremism (LWE)-affected seats where voting would be held as part of the first phase of polling on November 12.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath arrived in Raipur yesterday (October 23) morning where he was given a traditional welcome at the CM House by Raman Singh’s wife Veena and daughter Asmita.
The CM sought Yogi Adityanath’s blessings by touching his feet and later proceeded to Rajnandgaon. Yogi Adityanath was present at the returning officer’s court too when CM Raman Singh filed his nomination. All six candidates from Rajnandgaon district filed their nominations yesterday.
The contest in Rajnandgaon was expected to be interesting with former CM Ajit Jogi opposing Raman Singh. Jogi, however, pulled out of the contest and said he would contest from his traditional seat of Marwahi.
Speaking to the media at Raipur, Raman Singh said that by fielding Karuna Shukla against him, the Congress had proved that they did not have a local candidate against him in Rajnandgaon.
After the demise of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in August, the BJP had launched a number of programmes in his memory in Chhattisgarh. The ongoing Vikas Yatra of Raman Singh was rechristened as Atal Vikas Yatra and a vision document 2025 released by the state government was also named after the former PM.
Karuna Shukla, the late PM’s niece, had accusing the BJP of opportunism. She had said that Vajpayee was being remembered by the BJP only after he died while no BJP leader went to see him while he was unwell.
