Iran Calls for Early Decision on IPI

Iran’s ambassador in India Seyed Mehdi Nabizedeh has said that New Delhi must take a final call on the multi-billion dollar gas pipeline deal or else Tehran would engage in talks with other countries.

The pipeline was proposed to transport gas from Iran to India via Pakistan, Iran and Pakistan signed the deal in May this year.

“We went ahead with Pakistan and signed the agreement. But India can still be part of it. But I have told this before also that this time limit is not unlimited,” Nabizedeh was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Confirming reports that suggested China was keen on replacing India in the project the Ambassador said: “Yes it is true. We hope that this tripartite agreement is settled soon so that we do not have to talk with anyone else,” he said.

India has boycotted trilateral meetings since mid-2007, saying it first wants to resolve the issues of transit fees and transportation tariffs with Pakistan.
