Throwback Thursday: When Hrithik Roshan wanted to quit films after father Rakesh Roshan was shot at in 2000

It was January 21, 2000. Hrithik Roshan’s debut film Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai had been in the theatres for exactly a week and had emerged an out-out-out blockbuster. Clearly, it was time for celebrations at the Roshan house but fate had something else in store for the family. Hrithik’s father Rakesh Roshan, the director-producer of the film, got shot at near his office in Santacruz West, leaving the Roshans and the entire Bollywood in a state of utter shock.

The attack was perpetrated by two members of the Budesh gang who had fired two bullets at Roshan. As the filmmaker fell on the ground, the assailants fled the scene. But fortunately enough, he was taken to hospital on time and his life was saved. Since KNPH had become a massive commercial success, the underworld gang wanted a share of its profits, a demand Roshan had stonewalled.

Hrithik, in an interview with Simi Garewal, that happened weeks after the incident, opened up on what he went through at that time. An emotional Hrithik, on the brink of tears, said, “From shock to anger to seeing dad there on the hospital bed, I had never seen him like this. I wanted to quit, I really wanted to just quit films because I knew I was directly or indirectly responsible for what had happened to him and nothing was worth it. All this is not worth his life.”

The actor further said, “I think I should have [quit films] because it is very disillusioning and maybe, it goes from bad to worse. I know I had that chance then. I did not take the first step so I cannot hold anybody else responsible for not doing anything about it. I did not do anything about it.”

Hrithik added that he would have been a different person had the incident not occured. He also shared that he did not get a chance to celebrate the success of Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai.
