Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero loses to Salman Khan’s Race 3 and Aamir Khan’s TOH

Mumbai: The much-awaited Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Zero has finally hit theatres and while the critics have given the film mixed reviews, fans can’t seem to stop gushing over it. Despite a
number of negative reviews, Zero has managed to pull a fairly decent box office occupancy in it’s first day of release. The film got 45-50% occupancy on an average in the entire country
with some regions like Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata getting 75-80% occupancy, according to a film trade analyst. Now, usually, this would be a mammoth achievement, but
then the Khans do it with every film of theirs, ever year.
Unfortunately for SRK, despite the good start, Zero is behind Salman Khan/s Race 3, which released earlier this year and Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan, which released a day after
Diwali. According to BOI, the occupancy report of Race 3 on its opening day (morning shows) was 50-55% while Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan was even further ahead with 70%
occupancy.
While, both films were critically-panned, but their opening weekend collections were considerably mammoth. Unfortunately for Shah Rukh, neither did his film beat his contemporaries in
occupancy nor is it likely to beat them with its opening weekend collections. Add to that, the negative word of mouth because of critics will surely hamper the film’s chances to become a
huge box-office success.
According to film trade analyst, Akshaye Rathi, Zero is expected to open at Rs 30 crore as its day 1 collection at the box-office. The film opened at a total number of 5965 screens – 4380
in India and 1565 worldwide. However, SRK will need the fan support on this one if Zero has to be a hit. One can recall that his 2014 film Happy New Year was also critically-panned but
did huge box-office business nevertheless.
