Annan peace plan accepted by Syrian government
DAMASCUS: The government of Syria has agreed to accept the peace plan put forward by the United Nations and Arab League envoy, Kofi Annan his spokesman said on Tuesday.
Annan said he considered it “an important initial step that could bring an end to the violence and the bloodshed”, but implementation was the key.
Activist Rami Jarrah said, “We saw previously when there was the Arab League Protocol that the government accepted, what really happened on the ground was quite different”.
Annan’s six-point peace plan will be as
1. Syrian-led political process to address the aspirations and concerns of the Syrian people
2. UN-supervised cessation of armed violence in all its forms by all parties to protect civilians
3. All parties to ensure provision of humanitarian assistance to all areas affected by the fighting, and implement a daily two-hour humanitarian pause
4. Authorities to intensify the pace and scale of release of arbitrarily detained persons
5. Authorities to ensure freedom of movement throughout the country for journalists
6. Authorities to respect freedom of association and the right to demonstrate peacefully
Thousands of people have been killed in the uprising and many more have been detained and displaced according to UN sources.
While hundreds of security forces personnel have also died combating “armed terrorist gangs” according to Syrian government.
