Aquino Establishes Huge Lead over Rivals in Philippine Presidential Polls
In Philippine presidential polls marred by violence and technical glitches, Senator Benigno Aquino III has enhanced lead over his rivals, said media reports.
Chairman Jose Melo said that Aquino was leading by over four-million votes after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) tabulated results from 78.55 per cent of precincts nationwide, reports said.
Manuel Villar, a real estate magnate and one of Aquino’s bitterest rivals, admitted defeat and congratulated the son of democracy icon Corazon Aquino for his win, said reports.
“I am here now to accept the judgment of the people,” he was quoted as saying while talking to reporters a day after the elections.
“I congratulate Senator Aquino on his victory,” Villar was quoted as saying.
He also appealed to the people for time so that he could clear his name of corruption charges against him during the 90-day campaign, reports said.
The latest reports said that Aquino got 12.23 million votes, while ousted president Joseph Estrada, his closest rival, gained 7.74 million.
Villar finished third getting 4.32 million votes, and Gilbert Teodoro, candidate for the incumbent Lakas Kampi party, gained 3.24 million votes and was fourth, said reports.
As many as 14 people were killed during elections yesterday.
Besides, over 400 counting machines employed for the task faced technical problems and forced Comelec to extend the voting time by one hour.
Despite the glitches, many Filipinos said that they were pleasantly surprised at the speed at which the election results were transmitted.
