Communist Party Chief of Urumqi Sacked
In a bid to appease public anger in the wake of violent protests this week, the Chinese leaders have sacked the Communist Party chief of the troubled western Chinese city of Urumqi, said official Xinhua news agency.
Li Zhi, the chief of Communist Party of Urumqi was fired without any official reason for his dismissal.
The step came in the wake of ethnic tension in the city, in which at least five persons have died.
The protests in the Urumqi this week was largely taken out by Han Chinese against a spate of syringe attacks blamed on Uighur Muslim separatists. Earlier in July, communal riot in the city left nearly 200 dead.
The Xinhua report said that Li Zhi is to be replaced by Zhu Hailun, the head of Xinjiang region’s law-and-order committee.
The statement added that there had also been a leadership change in the Xinjiang Autonomous Regional Public Security Department, but gave no details.
Correspondents say that protesters who have marched in their thousands through Urumqi in recent days have demanded Mr Li’s dismissal for failing to provide public safety.
Some thinkers believe that the sacking is unusual as it shows the Chinese authorities believe they may have made mistakes in the handling of the unrest.
