Guardian Council Ready for Recount of Iran’s Presidential Vote
Amid protests against and charges of Iran’s presidential election being rigger, the country’s powerful Guardian Council has said that it is prepared to recount the disputed votes.
Mir Hossein Mousavi and other moderate candidates, who has contested A Ahmadinejad’s re-election, are seeking a rerun.
However, reports say that recount offer may not be accepted.
Iran’s top legislative body, the Guardian Council said that votes would be recounted in areas contested by the losing candidates
However, a spokesman for the council told state television that the recount may not invalidate the election as moderate candidates have been insisting on.
The opposition says millions of ballots may have gone astray.
According to reports, the authorities seem to be weakening in their support for President Ahmandinejad.
The country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has ordered an inquiry into the allegations of vote-rigging.
New demonstrations have been called by supporters of both President Ahmadinejad and Mr Mousavi and are due to take place in Vali Asr Square in central Tehran.
Monday’s protest involved hundreds of thousands of people and was one of the largest since the Iranian revolution 30 years ago.
