Gunman Hijacks Plane in Jamaica’s Montego Bay
In a bizarre plane hijack incidence, a gunman seized a Canadian charter plane on the tarmac near the resort city of Montego Bay, holding the flight crew hostage and making no clear demand for their release, says reports. An airport spokeswoman said that nobody had been injured.
According to the statement from Canadian Jet Airlines, the gunman embarked on the plane after it arrived in Montego Bay from Halifax, Nova Scotia. There were 182 passengers and crew on board the Boeing 737. However, all the passengers have been set free, the company said.
In a statement published on its website in morning on Monday, the airline said that the gunman and the crew of CanJet Flight 918 were still on board. As per CNN reports, five crew members were being held.
The gunman’s demands were not immediately clear, informed authorities. “There is somebody on the plane. We don’t know who it is,” said Karl Angell, a spokesman for the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
The airline said that “a full security operation is under way” and it is cooperating with authorities in this Caribbean island.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding was traveling to Montego Bay in response to the emergency; Radio Jamaica was quoted as reporting.
It may be mentioned that the charter airline is owned by Halifax-based IMP Group Ltd., according to CanJet’s Web site.
