Khamenei Warns Opponents with Harsh Response
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has warned that anyone resisting or threatening the nation’s authority will be directly confronted, he was leading Friday prayers at Tehran University.
He warned that differences of opinion and criticism could be tolerated, but if anyone was found standing against the Islamic republic, he would be met with a harsh response.
The comments were ostensibly directed towards Iran’s liberal opposition that cast aspersions over the outcome of presidential polls held in June.
Casting aside opposition claims of vote rigging, Khamenei had endorsed the controversial verdict that saw President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad assume office for his second consecutive term.
The poll outcome had triggered street protests, leading to the arrest of thousands of Iranians, many of whom are still held in custody say opposition leaders.
