Nuclear Test if UN Doesn’t Apologise: North Korea
Reacting to the UN denunciation of its recent rocket launch, North Korea has threatened to go for “self-defence” nuclear missile tests unless UN tenders an apology.
According to reports, the foreign ministry said that that the UN should apologise for “infringing” the country’s sovereignty and retract “all its resolutions and decisions” against it.
The ministry said that if UN does not apologies for its condemnation of April 5 rocket launch by Pyongyang, it would “take self-defence measures, including nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests”.
It also announced plans to build a light-water nuclear reactor, according to the statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.
The UN Security Council had denounced the rocket launch saying that it necessitated tightening of sanctions against North Korea, the country which carried out its first and only nuclear test in 2006.
In response to the missile launch, the UN Security Council imposed sanctions on three North Korean companies. Critics say that these sanctions were cover for a long-range missile test.
North Korea has insisted on putting a communications satellite in orbit, and said that it would disregard the sanctions, describing them as “a wanton violation of the UN charter”.
