Obama Calls for Punishment
WASHINGTON: The photos of American soldiers which show them abusing Afghan corpses in 2010 received widespread criticism. The photos which are published in Los Angeles Times, shows the soldiers posing with the mangled remains of suspected suicide bombers.
One of the pictures shows show soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division posing with the remains in Afghanistan’s eastern Zabul province.
Another picture apparently shows soldiers from the same division holding a dead man’s hand with the middle finger raised. Only two out of 18 photos are published.
The US President Barack Obama says that the American shoulders should be held accountable. White House spokesman Jay Carney told to reporters that, “The conduct depicted in those photos is reprehensible”. Carney also expressed disappointment over the publishing of photos by Times.
Defence Secretary Leon Panetta apologized “on behalf of the Department of Defense and the US government”.”I know that war is ugly and it’s violent and I know that young people sometimes caught up in the moment make some very foolish decisions,” Mr Panetta added.”I’m not excusing that behavior, but neither do I want these images to bring further injury to our people and to our relationship with the Afghan people.”
The times defended their decision. The paper’s editor Davan Maharaj said, “After careful consideration, we decided that publishing a small but representative selection of the photos would fulfill our obligation to readers to report vigorously and impartially on all aspects of the American mission in Afghanistan, including the allegation”.
The incidents further added to the long list of abused by US soldiers including killing of 17 innocent Afghans, Burning of Koran, etc. The Taliban called of peace talk’s wake of that rampage and threatened more attacks.
