Opposition Parties to Challenge Fonseka’s Arrest
Sri Lankan opposition parties have said that they will challenge the detention of defeated presidential candidate Gen Sarath Fonseka, reported BBC.
On charges of working with anti-government forces and planning a coup and assassinations, Fonseka was arrested on Monday but he denied the charge. His wife has visited him in detention, but his supporters fear for his life.
In a joint statement, the opposition parties said that they feared Fonseka would be killed in detention, said report.
“We have good reason to believe that the extra-judicial arrest of Gen Fonseka may be followed up with assassination while in custody,” said the statement.
The opposition has also called for protests over the arrest.
“We will take this matter to courts, we will take it before the people and we will take it before the international community,” opposition legislator Rauf Hakeem was quoted as saying.
Defence authorities said that Fonseka would probably face a military court, said report.
Rajiva Wijesinha, a senior government official, however, said that he hoped any proof would be promptly clarified and that any case brought would be a civil one, said report.
Meanwhile, Gen Fonseka’s wife, Anoma, was allowed to visit him at the navy headquarters in Colombo where he is being held, said report.
Anoma said that her husband trusted no one there and had therefore not eaten or drunk anything until she had taken him a meal, report said.
