People loved by others value their possession less

A research published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology has determined that people who get lots of love and acceptance from others value their possessions less. Materialism is linked to comfort. However researchers from the University of New Hampshire and Yale University have gauged the monetary value of people’s belongings in relation to how loved and secure they feel.

Researchers asked studied about 185 participants with an average age of 35years. They were asked to complete a couple of exercises. Participants were asked to put a money value on items like blanket and pen. It was seen that people who were insecure valued an item 5-times greater than its valuation by more secure people.

Lead researcher Edward Lemay said, “People value possessions, in part, because they afford a sense of protection, insurance, and comfort. But what we found was that if people already have a feeling of being loved and accepted by others, which also can provide a sense of protection, insurance, and comfort, those possessions decrease in value.”
