Powerful Quake Hits Western China; 300 Dead, Hundreds Feared Trapped

A powerful earthquake hit western China, followed by strong aftershocks, killing over 300 people and injuring more than 8,000 persons with many more people being trapped in damaged buildings, reported the Voice of America.

Report said that the quake rocked the western Chinese province of Qinghai early in the morning, leading buildings in villages around the region to collapse.

According to the China Earthquake Administration, the magnitude of the quake was 7.1, though the US Geological Survey puts it at 6.9, said report.

The quake that occurred before 8 in the morning hit the mountainous and remote western area, which divides Qinghai Province and Tibet, report said.

State media reported that a second quake occurred nearly five minutes later and destroyed 85 percent of the buildings in one township near the epicenter, said report.

Many people injured in the quake could be seen in the street with bleeding head wounds, while school children are among those reported to be trapped in rubbles, report said.

An Armed Police Detachment Commander in Qinghai, Shi Huajie, told Chinese state TV some 600 rescuers were scrambling to save the many people he said are buried in Yushu County. But he said that a lack of organization was slowing their efforts, said report.

Shi said that the quake rocked the area when a large number of people were still sleeping and that rescue operations was being obstructed due to the lack of heaving lifting equipment, report said.

Telecommunications have been disrupted and roads from the nearest airport are reported to be badly damaged, said report.

Rescue equipment is being rushed to the high altitude area.
